What this means when you hire
A nurse practitioner’s independence in Maine is a function of where they are in their career, not of the state alone. Two NPs with identical Maine licences can have different requirements.
- Confirm at hire whether the individual has completed the transition period.
- If not, put the required physician relationship in place before they begin seeing patients.
- Diarize the completion date; requirements change at it.
- Keep the documentation, because the answer is individual-specific and a licence lookup does not always show it.
Why the “FPA state” label misleads
Charts collapse a two-stage rule into a one-word answer. The same distortion appears in most FPA reporting: transition periods, hour thresholds and practice-area limits all disappear into a single green cell.
For an operator, the green cell is the least useful part. What you need is the individual practitioner’s status and, where a physician relationship is required, a physician who will actually do the work.

None of this bears on who owns the business. Maine permits non-physician ownership, including by estheticians. Ownership, scope, and independence are three different questions with three different answers in Maine, and conflating any two of them produces a plan that fails on the third.
